What:

Monday 10/7 through Friday 10/11, we are encouraging students to bring in supplies to support Byrd Barr Place and The Food Bank at St. Mary’s.

The below items have been specifically requested to serve those in our area. As we give or help, it is important to respect the voice of those we are helping and do our best to show honor in our efforts. Needed supplies are:

  • Salt

  • Sugar

  • Capers

  • Instant decaf coffee

  • Cooking Oil (Vegetable, Canola, or Peanut Oil)

  • Hearty Greens (Collards, Bok Choy, Mustard Greens, Kale)

  • Garlic Cloves

  • Rice Noodles or Instant Ramen

  • Canned Protein (Chicken, Salmon, Spam, Sausage, Mackerel)

  • Hearty Soup (Chicken, Lentil, Vegetable)

  • Peanut Butter or Almond Butter

  • Soy Sauce or Fish Sauce

  • Jasmine Rice or Brown Rice

  • Hot Sauce (varieties like Sriracha or Louisiana hot sauce)

Why:

We are not a people of only words, we also live out our faith and values through deeds. This week is just one way we can display our virtues and serve our city to God’s glory. Through this SCCS Serves week, we will love our neighbors well in providing for basic needs, come together as a community of invested citizens, and call our students to act as servant leaders.

How:

Please help your student gather needed items and bring them to the school Monday through Friday that week. Students can place items in their classroom boxes after drop-off.

Make it Meaningful:

We want acts of service to be connected to the hearts of our students. Here are just a few ideas as you think about how to make this week meaningful for your particular student:

  • Talk with your student about need and provision. Depending on your student's age, the idea of a food/supply drive may feel abstract or distant. This is a great opportunity to talk to your child at an age-appropriate level about how not everyone has all they need, how we can be tools of God in providing for others, and how God ultimately provides for us abundantly in Christ.

  • Involve your neighbors. Print this flyer and have your student knock on neighbors’ doors to see if they’d like to contribute. We’ve had great luck with students going back on a designated day to pick up the cans and deliver thank-you notes.

  • Make it a lesson. Set a budget and go shopping with your child. This is a great exercise for students learning the value of money and how choices add up. Talk about how each choice will sustain the body of a person made in the image of God.

Also, a Friendly Competition:

For an added bit of fun, we will have Logic and Rhetoric students compete as Houses for points. Aquila House is the reigning champion from last year! Points will be assigned as follows:

1-point items: Salt, Sugar, Garlic Cloves, Rice Noodles or Instant Ramen, Canned Protein (Chicken, Salmon, Spam, Sausage, Mackerel), Hearty Soup (Chicken, Lentil, Vegetable), Jasmine Rice or Brown Rice, Hot Sauce (varieties like Sriracha or Louisiana hot sauce), Dry Black-eyed Peas or Lentils, Spices (Curry Powder, Paprika, Cumin, Cayenne—popular in various APPI and Black dishes), Fresh Ginger

2-point items: Jam, Capers, Instant decaf coffee, Cooking Oil (Vegetable, Canola, or Peanut Oil), Hearty Greens (Collards, Bok Choy, Mustard Greens, Kale), Soy Sauce or Fish Sauce

3-point items: Peanut Butter or Almond Butter

For Pre-K through 6th grade, any class with 100% participation in the drive will earn an ice cream sandwich treat from Mrs. Arther.
