SCCS Statement of Faith

The following is the foundation of beliefs on which Seattle Classical Christian School is based. They are also the key elements of Christianity that will be unapologetically taught in various ways through all grade levels. The substance of these statements is that which will be considered primary doctrine in the school. Secondary or divisive doctrines and issues will not be presented as primary doctrine. When these types of doctrine or issues arise they will be referred to the family and local churches for final authority.

The Bible

We believe the Bible to be the inerrant and absolute Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible, as it was originally written, is without error (Ps.18:30; 19:7; Prov. 30:5-6) and speaks true and accurately in all it proclaims, including areas of history, science, and human nature (Ex. 17:14; 34:27; Isa. 45:4-7; Jer. 17:9). Moreover, while initially speaking to the biblical authors' particular times, cultures, and situations, it simultaneously preserves the transcultural redemptive message––designed for all people, in all times, and all cultural situations (Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:1-11). Thus, every word of the Bible, while in the context of the entire Bible, is the inspired word of God (2 Tim. 3:16). The Bible is our only authoritative rule for faith and practice. It is the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creed, and opinion shall be tried and it is the standard of and for all truth.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19; John 5:26; Rev. 1:8). He is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient (Ps. 115:3; cf. Isa. 14:27; 55:11; Jer. 32:17). In all things He is limited by nothing other than His own nature and character (Num. 23:19). We believe the God we serve is holy, righteous, good, just, loving, and full of mercy (Rev. 15:3-4). He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Governor of everything that has, is, or will be made (Ps. 104).

WHO GOD IS

We believe in the true deity and full humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ (Col. 2:9), in His virgin birth (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:18-25), in His sinless life (2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 4:15), in His miracles (Matt. 11:4-5), in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood (1 Peter 2:24), in His bodily resurrection (Luke 24:6-7), in His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19), and in His personal return in power and glory (Matt. 24:30).

THE PERSON AND WORK OF JESUS

We believe in the full deity of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 2:11), acknowledging Him together with the Father and the Son as creator and redeemer (Gen. 1:2; Ps. 104:30). We believe that the Holy Spirit is imparted to believers as a helper and that He fills, teaches, leads, assures and prays for believers (John 14:26;16:7-8; Eph. 1:13; Rom. 8:26-27).

THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe God created man in His own image, wonderfully and immutably male and female (Gen. 1:27). These two distinct genders together reflect the image and nature of God. God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply, to fill the earth and subdue it, and to have dominion over creation (Gen. 1:28). God’s creation of and mandate to Adam and Eve establish the model for the family as well as mirror Christ’s relationship to the church and, therefore, marriage is designed to be exclusively between one man and one woman (Eph. 5:22-32).

GOD’S DESIGN OF MAN

We believe in an historical creation account in which Adam and Eve were historical people (Luke 3:23-38), and in an historic fall by which sin came into the world.  These elements are necessary for an orthodox Christian faith which holds that the only solution to the plight of evil is the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:12-21; 1 Cor. 15:20-22).

CREATION

Because we are created in the image of God, we believe that all human life is sacred and created by God (Gen. 1:27; Gen. 2:7). Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death (Ps. 139:13-16; Jer. 22:3). We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life (Matt. 10:29-31; Prov. 31:8-9).

THE VALUE OF MAN

Although God gave man authority over creation, God made man subordinate to Himself (2 Chron. 20:6; Dan. 4:35). Adam attempted to throw off God’s authority and in his first sin condemned not only himself but all of mankind to an estate of sin (Rom.5:12-14). All of mankind in Adam is now separated from God and in need of a redeemer (Gal. 5:19-21; 1 John 3:4-6; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 John 1:7-9).

MAN AND SIN

We believe that God, in His love and mercy, provided a way to salvation for all mankind through Jesus’ substitutionary death on the cross (John 3:16). We believe that this salvation is by grace through faith alone (Eph. 2:1-10). We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:9).

SALVATION

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life (Gal. 5:16-24). We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and lost, those who are saved to the resurrection of life, and those who are lost to the resurrection of damnation (1 Thess. 4:16; John 5:28-29). We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (Gal. 3:28; Eph. 4:1-6).

THE CHURCH

We believe that those whom God has saved are sent into the world by Christ as He was by the Father (John 17:13-19). Those so sent are ambassadors, commissioned to go make disciples and make Christ known to the whole world (Matt. 28:18-20). Because of the grace we have been shown, and the truth and love of Jesus that we are called to share, we believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity, and pursued with the hope that all may come to Christ (John 13:34).

THE GREAT COMMISSION

Final Authority for Matters of Belief and Conduct

The statement of faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs: the Bible itself is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For the purposes of SCCS’s doctrine, practice, policy and discipline, the Board of Directors serves as SCCS’s final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.

We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of Seattle Classical Christian School as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to the Seattle Classical Christian School members and the community, it is necessary that:

  • All persons employed by SCCS in any capacity agree to this statement of faith and instruct their students in light of its tenets.

  • All volunteers read the statement of faith and agree to adhere to it or defer to teachers regarding any topic they may disagree with.

  • We encourage families that investigate SCCS to carefully consider the statement of faith. Many families who attend SCCS will wholeheartedly agree with these tenets. Some families will be in the process of contemplating some of these topics. And there may be some families that disagree with all or part of the statement. SCCS wants to provide a school environment that lovingly welcomes families who find themselves at different points on this spectrum. We do, however, want parents to understand that the tenets contained within the Statement of Faith will be actively taught, discussed, and woven throughout instruction. We humbly ask that parents consider this as they explore the school and respect this stance should they choose to enroll.
